Osun Muslim Group Backs Oyebamiji For Governorship Election

A coalition of Muslim leaders in Osun State has questioned Governor Ademola Adeleke's assertion that his administration has done more for Muslims than previous governments. The group, led by Sheikh Qozeem AbdulRahaman, announced its support for APC candidate Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The Concerned Muslim Stakeholders and League of Alfas in Osun State organised a press conference in Osogbo on Thursday titled "State of the Nation: A Call to the Conscience of Muslims in Osun State." AbdulRahaman said the election presents an opportunity for voters to assess candidates on issues of governance, fairness and leadership.

The coalition disagreed with the Adeleke administration's assessment of its record on issues affecting the Muslim community. According to AbdulRahaman, the group believes some projects cited by the government, including the Government House Mosque and the Osun Hajj Camp, do not reflect the level of completion described by the administration.

Abdulganiy Sahid, the group's Secretary, said some members of the Muslim community had raised concerns about representation in political appointments and leadership positions within the state government. He described those concerns as perceptions expressed by members of the community and called for equitable representation in public offices.

The coalition stressed that its position was not intended to promote religious division. According to AbdulRahaman, the group supports peaceful coexistence among adherents of different faiths and seeks equal opportunities for all residents of the state.

Speaking at the press conference, AbdulRahaman urged members of the public to verify the status of the projects independently. He called on Muslims across Osun State to participate peacefully in the governorship election and exercise their democratic rights in accordance with their conscience.

The group endorsed Oyebamiji, urging voters to evaluate him based on what it described as his character, competence, experience, and leadership qualities rather than on religious affiliation alone.

Sheikh Qozeem AbdulRahaman, the president of Concerned Muslim Stakeholders and League of Alfas in Osun State, is a respected Islamic leader. He has been a vocal advocate for Muslim rights and has worked closely with the state government on several projects.

Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, the APC candidate, has been a member of the Osun State House of Assembly. He served for eight years before stepping down in 2019 to pursue his governorship ambition.

The August 15 governorship election will determine the next leader of Osun State. Voters will cast their ballots to choose between the APC candidate, PDP candidate, and other candidates contesting for the governorship seat.
