Tragically, five people in the other vehicle also perished in the devastating crash.
Fans and players alike paid their respects as images of the two fallen officers were displayed on the stadium screen during Middlesbrough’s Championship match against West Bromwich Albion. But the mourning wasn't confined to one stadium. Seaton Carew FC and FC Hartlepool also held their own tributes during their match, a testament to the deep roots PC Blades, in particular, had in the local football scene. He had served as a junior football coach at both clubs, making him a familiar and beloved figure.
Marcus Newing, a coach at Seaton Carew and a friend of PC Blades, described the past week as "horrendous." Yet, he found some solace in the overwhelming support pouring in from across the country. He remembered PC Blades not just as a colleague, but as a devoted father and husband, a man always ready to lend a hand. "He was giving to everybody, he was daft as a brush, the smile that would light up a room and he loved being around people," Newing shared, his voice thick with emotion.
This shared grief has a remarkable way of bridging divides. Marty Hewitt, an ambassador for Seaton FC, noted how the tragedy had brought rival clubs together in a common cause of remembrance. "Everyone just wants to put some time back and take a moment out and reflect on what Matty’s done and obviously for the life of Tom as well," he stated. Middlesbrough FC also formally acknowledged the officers' service, commending their dedication and the broader efforts of Cleveland Police in safeguarding the local community. Hartlepool United joined in on Friday evening, observing a two-minute silence before their National League match against Eastleigh.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the catastrophic crash is ongoing. Authorities have reported that 24 people have been arrested in connection with the incident, though details surrounding these arrests remain scarce. The five individuals who were travelling in the other vehicle and also lost their lives have been named as Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, Theo Rae, 17, and Cole Robert Worthy, 17.
