Adelaide captain Jordan Dawson produced one of the greatest quarters in AFL history as the Crows obliterated the Western Bulldogs by 57 points at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night.

The Crows kicked nine goals from just 17 inside-50s in the first term, leading by 41 points at quarter time. Dawson had three goals and 17 touches in that quarter alone, earning the third-highest ranking ever recorded for a single term.

"I'm not sure if I've seen a Bulldogs midfield humbled like this before," analyst David King said on Kayo Sports. "This is a mauling but, I tell you what, it's special to watch."

The Bulldogs started the season 4-0 before losing four straight to top sides. They'd won four of their last five coming into this game, but those wins were by a combined 15 points. Thursday's loss exposed them badly.

Coach Luke Beveridge didn't sugarcoat it. "I think all over the park they [Crows] were impressive, and we were just second rate," he said.

Dawson finished with 32 disposals, three goals, and five inside 50s, burning his tagger Matt Kennedy. It came after a brutal few months — his brother Jaryd died in April.

"It's been a bloody tough time obviously, for myself and my family," Dawson told Seven before the game. "Footy's been that release and that understanding for me."

He also spoke about the emotion after the Crows' one-point win over Geelong in round 13. "It was a moment I really felt like I wanted him there for," he said.

"To not have him there, it kind of hit me straight after the game … just looking around the stands and up to the sky and knowing that he wasn't there, it was pretty overwhelming."

The Crows were without Izak Rankine and Taylor Walker but still dominated. They won contested ball 45-33 in the first quarter and had a 67-36 advantage in uncontested possessions.

Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks said the club knew Dawson was a special leader years ago. "He's class, he's a warrior," Nicks said.

The Bulldogs' Marcus Bontempelli had little impact, and the Dogs' lack of size was exposed. Beveridge noted the Crows wanted "retribution" after losing to the Dogs by six points in round two.
