Yoh, pensioners are fuming. After The South African published an article explaining the qualifying criteria for the SASSA Older Persons Grant, the Facebook comments section flooded with one shocking complaint: people simply aren't getting their money.

Loraine Patricia Jones got straight to the point: "I'm over 60, and I didn't receive my pension this month, so like many other elderly people." Moira Heldsinger echoed the same frustration in four words: "Same here, I can't."

For pensioners who depend on that money for food, transport, and medication, silence from SASSA isn't just inconvenient — it's devastating. Months of short payments and zero communication are leaving people desperate.

Helena Steenkamp offered a partial clue that raised more questions than it answered: "I also didn't receive my grant they said I must review." But nobody told her what that review process involves.

Susanna Saul, aged 66, revealed the problem has been dragging on even longer: "For 3 months I don't receive full pension. I don't know what's wrong." Three months of short payments with no communication isn't an isolated complaint.

According to SASSA's own qualifying criteria, any South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee aged 60 or older who passes the means test and doesn't receive another social grant is entitled to their full monthly payment every single month. So what's causing the disruptions?

Charlotte Ross Ne Cothill shed some light on what may be behind the sudden cut-offs. She explained that her own mother received her grant right up until the month her mother passed away at 84, confirming there's no upper age limit for the grant. However, she flagged one growing risk that many pensioners may not be aware of.

SASSA is currently rolling out Proof of Living requirements to combat grant fraud, following the discovery of people collecting payments on behalf of deceased beneficiaries. Legitimate pensioners who miss a required update or fail to respond to a review notice are now being caught in that net, losing their grants without ever understanding why.

If your grant has been suspended or reduced without explanation, don't wait. Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID and request a written outcome of your review.
