'Breaking our hearts a little'

Layla Kolbe, wife of Springboks full-back Cheslin Kolbe, shared a touching Instagram post on Monday 25 May showing their kids saying goodbye to their dad. The video, posted as the family packed up nine years of life abroad, has fans emotional.

"Leaving Japan is breaking our hearts a little. We loved this chapter more than words can say. But sometimes life calls you home and we're choosing to be closer to family and the moments that matter most," Layla wrote.

She revealed she'd already packed up their stuff in Japan and was returning to South Africa after three weeks away from their three children — Kylah (6), Mila Sky (3) and Cayden (1). Layla is leaving earlier than Cheslin so she can be there for their daughter's market day.

"9 years abroad. 3 years in 2 countries — living 24 hours apart — solo parenting. Countless memories. This move comes with sacrifice, but some sacrifices are worth making. Time is the one thing we can never get back and we've chosen to invest it where it matters most," she added.

She ended with: "Not goodbye. See you again one day. ❤️🇯🇵🇿🇦"

Homecoming to the Stormers

Cheslin Kolbe announced in May that he'd return to South Africa for his next chapter. The DHL Stormers later confirmed he'll join the Cape Town-based team.

"Cheslin is a son of this community and has remained a staunch DHL Stormers fan his whole life. He gives such hope and inspiration to our fans, so to have him back in our club colours is huge," said Director of Rugby John Dobson in a club statement.

Dobson added: "As a player, he can do things on the field that nobody else can. Beyond that, his attitude and work ethic are second to none, and his presence in the squad is sure to lift everyone around him."

The Stormers expect Kolbe to play an invaluable role both on and off the field as they develop their squad. He'll be 35 in 2029, and the club believes his strike power, discipline, conditioning, versatility and work ethic will set an example for young talent coming through.

A family's sacrifice

Layla's post gave fans a rare glimpse into the personal side of a rugby star's career move. The Kolbes spent three years living 24 hours apart across two countries, with Layla solo parenting their three kids.

"This move comes with sacrifice, but some sacrifices are worth making," she wrote, summing up the family's decision to prioritise time together over the adventure abroad.

For South African rugby fans, the Kolbe family's return is a win — but it came with a price.
