Johannesburg motorists are in for a bumpy ride on June 30, as three approved marches are set to cause significant traffic disruptions across the city. According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), thousands of people will participate in separate marches in the Johannesburg CBD, Hillbrow, and Midrand, with integrated law enforcement teams deployed across the city to monitor the demonstrations and manage traffic.
The first march, organised by March & March, is expected to draw around 5 000 participants. The demonstration will focus on issues including inner-city safety, youth development, and improved access to community services. Marchers will gather at Beyers Naudé Square before marching to Constitution Hill, where they intend to hand over a memorandum to the Hillbrow Station Commander. The march is scheduled to take place between 10:00 and 14:00 and will move along Helen Joseph Street, Troye Street, Twist Street, Kotze Street, and Queen Street.
A second march, organised by the Labour and Civic Organisation (LACO), is expected to attract approximately 1 200 participants. The group plans to raise concerns relating to illegal immigration policies and will march to the Department of Home Affairs to deliver a memorandum. Participants will gather at the intersection of Kotze and Hospital streets before proceeding to Plein Street. This march is expected to take place between 09:00 and 12:00.
A third demonstration will be held in Glen Austin, Midrand. The Mayibuye Youth Activism Movement is expected to lead around 800 participants in a march focused on youth employment opportunities. Marchers will gather at the open space on the corner of Dale Road and Modderfontein Road before proceeding to the Sandton Plant Hire offices to hand over a memorandum relating to local employment concerns. The procession is expected to run from 10:00 until 12:00, with participants dispersing by around 13:00.
JMPD has warned motorists to avoid affected streets wherever possible and make use of alternative routes. Law enforcement officials will remain on high alert throughout the day to respond to any spontaneous protests, pickets, or public gatherings that may arise. Authorities are encouraging commuters to plan their journeys carefully, allow extra travel time, and follow all instructions from traffic officers on duty.
The JMPD statement read:
'Significant traffic disruptions and delays are anticipated between 07:00 and 16:00.'
Rolling Road Closures and Traffic Delays
As each procession moves along its approved route, rolling road closures and temporary barricades will be implemented. Motorists are advised to exercise extreme patience and follow the directions of JMPD and law enforcement officers on the ground, or plan their travel outside the affected areas during these times.
