Victor Mathew Bobai, Senior Special Adviser to Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani on Public Affairs, has stepped in to defend Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa following comments the minister made about former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. Bobai is adamant that Musa’s remarks, which touched on developments and community relations in Kaduna during El-Rufai's tenure, shouldn't be seen as a personal or politically motivated jab.
During a recent Channels Television interview, General Musa spoke about the state of affairs in Kaduna, raising concerns about the lasting effects of some policies and events on inter-community relationships. He specifically mentioned ongoing grievances in parts of Southern Kaduna related to killings reported during El-Rufai's time in office. Musa did note that Governor Sani has been working to foster greater unity, but he also described El-Rufai as "misguided" rather than an enemy.
Bobai, in a statement released on September 6, 2026, stressed that Musa’s comments should be understood as part of the general public discourse. He clarified that these remarks do not represent an official military position or any kind of directive from the Ministry of Defence. "We must distinguish between an official directive and a political opinion," Bobai stated. "He participated in a public conversation and expressed his assessment of the political environment."
While acknowledging the significant responsibilities that come with Musa’s ministerial role, Bobai argued that public officials are still entitled to engage in discussions on important national matters. He urged those who disagreed with the minister to tackle his claims with facts and evidence, rather than resorting to personal attacks or insults. "Challenge General Musa’s facts if you disagree with them. Produce evidence. Correct him where necessary. But don’t replace argument with insults,” he advised.
Bobai also highlighted General Musa's extensive military background. He pointed out that before becoming Chief of Defence Staff and later Minister of Defence, Musa held numerous command positions. "This is a man whose professional life was built around the Nigerian flag before any political party became relevant to his present position,” Bobai said, underscoring Musa’s long service to the nation.
When it comes to the specific issues raised regarding El-Rufai's administration, Bobai encouraged journalists and commentators to consult the former governor’s own speeches, interviews, and public statements. He noted that the points Musa brought up have been subjects of public debate in Kaduna for years. Bobai called on the media to ensure they are using complete recordings and verifiable information when reporting on these matters. He also cautioned against presenting disputed political claims as established facts without proper evidence or a competent finding.
Furthermore, Bobai reiterated that Musa’s personal views should not be confused with the official stance of the Armed Forces, which he described as institutions of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He maintained that criticism directed at any public official should be met with evidence-based responses, not personal assaults. "Defending General Musa does not require attacking his critics. Our strongest defence is evidence, his record of service and the truth,” Bobai concluded. He advocated for continued public dialogue on contentious national issues, emphasizing the importance of democratic values, responsible journalism, and the rule of law.
