Cebu City, Philippines

  • Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival on Wednesday refused to engage in a public spat with Vice Mayor Tomas Osmeña, saying he would simply 'move forward' and focus on governance. This comes after drawing criticism for allegedly 'playing it safe' during the city's commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the landmark West Philippine Sea ruling.

The 10th anniversary of the West Philippine Sea ruling was commemorated last July 12, which marked a decade since the Philippines won a major victory against China in the Arbitral Tribunal. The ruling was a historic moment for the Philippines, as it marked a major victory against China's claims in the South China Sea.

Archival, along with other city officials, attended the commemoration but did not deliver a statement. This move sparked criticism from Osmeña, who accused Archival of 'playing it safe' and not fully supporting the city's stance on the West Philippine Sea issue. Osmeña even went as far as to call Archival 'cowardly' for not taking a stronger stance.

However, Archival refused to engage with Osmeña's criticisms, saying that he would focus on governing the city instead. 'We will move forward and focus on our governance programs,' Archival said in an interview with local media. 'We will not be swayed by criticisms from certain quarters.'

Archival has been mayor of Cebu City since 2019 and has been known for his progressive approach to governance. He has implemented various programs aimed at improving the city's infrastructure, education, and healthcare systems. Despite his efforts, Archival has faced criticisms from some quarters for not being bold enough in his decision-making.

Osmeña, on the other hand, has been a long-time ally of Archival. The two have worked together on various city projects, but their relationship has been strained in recent months. Osmeña has been critical of Archival's governance style, saying that he has been too focused on his own power and influence.

The criticism between the two city officials has sparked debate among Cebu City residents, who are divided on whether Archival is doing enough to support the city's stance on the West Philippine Sea issue. Some residents have come to Archival's defense, saying that he is doing his best to govern the city despite the challenges it faces. Others have criticized Archival for not being bold enough in his decision-making.

A resident of Cebu City who wished to remain anonymous said, 'I think Mayor Archival is doing his best to govern the city. However, I think he should be more bold in his decision-making. The city needs strong leadership now more than ever.'

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said, 'I think Mayor Archival is playing it safe, just like Vice Mayor Osmeña said. We need someone who will take risks and make tough decisions to move the city forward.'

The debate between Archival and Osmeña is ongoing, with both officials remaining firm in their views. However, it remains to be seen how this criticism will affect the city's governance and the residents who live there.
