Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has threatened to expose New Patriotic Party members allegedly selling Agenda 111 hospital contracts and taking kickbacks. He made the bold claim after NPP MPs criticized the NDC government for stalling the project.
Kennedy Agyapong, a former Defence and Interior Committee chairman, made these allegations in a video recorded and published on YouTube. He claims that the estimated cost of the hospital projects was highly inflated, and certain individuals who secured the initial contracts turned around and sublet/sold them to others, while pocketing a 10% kickback of the total contract value for themselves.
According to Agyapong, one of the NPP members approached his wife with an offer to give her one such contract for an 11% kickback. He concludes that these practices led to massive leakages of state funds, which ultimately resulted in the abandonment and delayed completion of many of the hospital projects.
The Afari Military Hospital project, which is 98% complete, is an uncompleted 500-bed health facility located in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region. Initiated in 2014, the project is intended to ease pressure on the 37 Military Hospital in Accra and improve emergency medical services across Ghana's middle belt.
Agyapong's allegations are not the first time he has taken on the NPP. In 2012, he blew the lid off the Woyome scandal, where a businessman was paid GH¢51.2 million as judgment debt without parliamentary approval. His efforts led to the state taking action against the Woyome.
As the country waits with bated breath for Agyapong's next move, the masses are left wondering if they will be treated like the masses in George Orwell's '1984'. The Office of the Special Prosecutor, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), and other agencies are being urged to invite Agyapong to 'spill the beans' and reveal the names of those involved in the scandal.
Agyapong's threat comes after NPP MPs toured the Afari Military Hospital and criticized the NDC government for stalling the project. He felt that the MPs were acting hypocritically, given the allegations of corruption within their own ranks.
In a bold move, Agyapong has warned the NPP party to stop targeting him, or he will reveal how these internal practices caused the projects to fail. As Ghanaians, we can't help but wonder if we will be treated like the masses in George Orwell's '1984'. The office of the special prosecutor, EOCO, and other agencies are now being called upon to task Kennedy Agyapong to spill the beans and reveal those involved in this scandal.
The Afari Military Hospital project has seen numerous delays and cost overruns. If Agyapong's claims are true, then the blame for the delays and cost overruns lies at the doorstep of the NPP members who allegedly sold the contracts.
As the country awaits the outcome of this scandal, Ghanaians are being urged to put pressure on the government to take action. The government has promised to investigate the allegations and take necessary action if found guilty.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor is urging Ghanaians to support their efforts in fighting corruption within the NPP. The Office has assured that they will do everything possible to uncover the truth behind Agyapong's claims.
In a related development, the government has announced plans to review all existing government contracts for irregularities. This comes after Agyapong's allegations of corruption within the NPP.
The government has also assured that any individual or group found guilty of corruption will face the full force of the law. The government has vowed to take a zero-tolerance stance on corruption and ensure that those involved in corruption face justice.
If Agyapong's claims are true, then this scandal could be the biggest corruption scandal in Ghana's history. The country is now left wondering if the allegations are true and what actions will be taken if found guilty.
