The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GHIE) has outlined a series of flood prevention measures following last Monday's heavy downpour in Accra, which caused significant devastation and flooding. Ing. Michael Obeng Konadu, GHIE's Chairman of the Civil Technical Division, appeared on Joy FM's Super Morning Show, detailing discussions on how best to implement the measures in a coordinated and sustainable manner to prevent a repeat of the recent devastation. Ing. Konadu emphasized the need for proactive engineering solutions and long-term planning to avoid recurring flood-related disasters in densely populated urban areas like Accra.

Ing. Michael Obeng Konadu has an impressive background; he is a renowned engineer with over 20 years of experience in the field. Prior to his appointment as the Chairman of the Civil Technical Division, he was the Deputy Manager of the Water and Sanitation Department of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

The GHIE has stressed the importance of strengthening drainage systems, improving urban planning, and ensuring stricter enforcement of safety and environmental regulations. Ing. Konadu stated that these measures would not only reduce the risk of flooding but also improve the overall quality of life for Accra residents. He also highlighted the need for a more coordinated approach to flood management, involving all stakeholders, including local governments, the private sector, and the public.

GHIE's proposed measures are expected to be implemented in phases, with the first phase focusing on upgrading and expanding Accra's drainage infrastructure. This will involve the construction of new drainage channels, culverts, and stormwater management systems. The GHIE has estimated that this phase will require an initial investment of over GHS 100 million (approximately $ 20 million USD), funded through a combination of government and private sector sources.

Ing. Konadu also emphasized the need for public education and awareness on flood risks and prevention measures. He proposed the establishment of a flood management authority to oversee the implementation of the measures and ensure their effectiveness.

The GHIE is expected to submit its final report on the flood prevention plan to the government within the next six months. In the meantime, Ing. Konadu has urged Accra residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent flood-related disasters.
