Multiple Attacks on Towns and Prison

Mali's army is facing a new wave of attacks from jihadists and separatist Tuareg groups, who have struck multiple towns and a prison in a coordinated assault. The attacks come more than two months after a previous incident in which the defence minister was killed.

The attacks were reported in Gao, Anefis, Aguelhok, and Sevare, as well as a prison in Kenieroba. Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, a spokesman for the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), an ethnic Tuareg separatist movement, told AFP that “several positions have fallen, but fighting is still underway inside the city” of Anefis.

A resident of Anefis confirmed that “armed groups are in the town, but the army is still putting up resistance. The camp (there) has not yet fallen”. The northern towns of Anefis and Aguelhok are the last remaining locations where Mali's army maintains a presence in the Kidal region, following the massive attacks of April 25 and 26.

Prison Attack Sparks Fears of Larger Insurgency

The major Kenieroba prison complex, where jihadists, among others, are held, located a few dozen kilometres from the capital, Bamako, was also under attack. “We are under our beds, the gunfire continues,” a prisoner told AFP.

The attacks are a significant blow to the ruling military junta, which has been struggling to maintain control in the north. The FLA has been a major force in the region for years, and its control of Kidal was a significant defeat for the government.

Nigerian Angle: Growing Regional Instability

The instability in Mali has significant implications for the rest of West Africa, including Nigeria. The FLA has links to other groups in the region, including al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

The attacks also come at a time of growing regional instability, with several countries in the Sahel region facing similar security challenges. Nigeria, which has faced its own Boko Haram insurgency, is particularly vulnerable to the spread of extremism in the region.
