New York is having a moment. The Knicks are breaking records in the NBA Finals, the FIFA World Cup is in town, and the city's bar scene is arguably just as deserving of a trophy.

From classic heritage hotel cocktail bars to contemporary newcomers, here are eight of New York's best places to get a drink.

The classics: Four heritage hotel bars

### Bemelmans Bar

Small, cosy, and tucked inside The Carlyle Hotel on the Upper East Side, Bemelmans has been around since the 1940s. It feels like you've stumbled into the best local party — possibly choreographed by Woody Allen. Rub shoulders with young Wall Street financiers and cougars in backless dresses, but don't forget to look up at the gold-leaf ceilings and murals painted by Ludwig Bemelmans, author of Madeline. Only about 25 tables inside, so that intimate vibe is guaranteed. The Steinway piano gets going most nights from 5pm.

Martinis from $US31 ($45).

### The Palm Court at The Plaza

Gen Xers who watched Sex and the City will remember Carrie Bradshaw arriving late to Mr Big and Natasha's engagement party here. Under the Tiffany leaded glass-domed ceiling, order a White Cosmopolitan ($US30). The Palm Court debuted when The Plaza opened in 1907 — it's as old-money New York as it gets, with emerald green seats, potted palms, chandeliers, and popping champagne corks. F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald were regulars.

If you have to ask about personal caviar service, you probably don't belong.

### King Cole Bar at The St Regis

This small, characterful bar on the ground floor of the St Regis hotel is the birthplace of the Bloody Mary (originally called the "Red Snapper") in 1934. It just underwent a refresh — darker blue carpet, purple velvet seats — but the historic 30-foot-wide Maxfield Parrish Old King Cole mural remains. Celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Salvador Dali, and John Lennon have sipped here. A 20-something from Brooklyn says she loves when her mum takes her for a special treat, though she admits the crowd is older and it's rumoured male escorts frequent the bar. Try the Red Snapper.
