If you thought last Sunday's crowd at Federation Square was big, wait until Saturday.
About 7000 people packed the square for the Socceroos' win over Turkey. With the team chasing a second straight group win against the United States, that number could be even bigger — despite forecasts of light rain and 12-degree temperatures.
But here's the thing: you don't have to squeeze into Fed Square. Melbourne is full of pubs, clubs, and even a bowling alley showing the match from 5am.
AAMI Park is opening its gates at 4am — specifically Gate Two (Eastern Concourse) and Gate Seven (Western Concourse) — with kick-off an hour later. It's the only major public venue running a watch party for this early game. It'll return for the final group match against Paraguay at midday next Friday.
Marvel Stadium is also hosting a watch party, but not in the stadium itself. Head to Friends of Fire, the concourse bar between gates two and three.
For those who prefer a pub atmosphere, the city has plenty of options: Young and Jackson, The Oxford Scholar, Quarterhouse in Docklands, Hickens Hotel on Russell Street, and The Imperial at Bourke and Spring streets are all showing the game.
The Keys in Preston is doing something different. The 600-person venue is opening its Plenty Road doors early and putting on a buffet breakfast. Normally a bowling alley, it's swapping the sound of pins for the sizzle of bacon and a big screen. You can eat your feelings depending on how the game goes.
The Sporting Globe is streaming the game at all its locations — Northland, Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Doncaster, Werribee, and Mordialloc.
In the inner north, the Royal Derby Hotel and the Terminus Hotel are also showing it. One pub that usually welcomes Blues fans will go green and gold for the day.
St Kilda has the usual suspects: The Espy, The Fifth Province, Harvey's Sports Bar, and St Kilda Sports Club. Also in the area: Port Melbourne's Exchange Hotel, the Limerick Arms in South Melbourne, and the Balaclava Hotel.
Richmond fans can head to the Richmond Club Hotel on Swan Street, the Prince Alfred on Church Street, or Richmond Republic on Bridge Road.
In the inner west, the Vic and the Hobsons Bay Hotel in Williamstown are both showing the game.
Many suburban football clubs are also streaming the match, with some even putting on breakfasts. A full list is available online.
So whether you're an early riser or planning to extend your Friday night, there's a spot for you. Just bring your green and gold — and maybe an umbrella.
