The Springboks open their 2026 international season on Saturday against the Barbarians at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, and Rassie Erasmus has done what Rassie Erasmus does — thrown a curveball selection that has everyone talking.
Lions fullback Quan Horn will start at flyhalf. Yes, you read that right. A fullback at flyhalf. Horn has never played the position professionally, but Erasmus has been impressed with his training and with the injury and availability crisis at 10. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is still injured. Handré Pollard is preparing for Friday's URC final with the Bulls. Manie Libbok only recently returned from Japan. Damian Willemse is absent entirely. So Horn gets the nod.
Four players will make their Springbok debuts on Saturday, though no Test caps are awarded for this fixture. The most notable is Junior Springbok captain Riley Norton, who starts in the second row alongside Franco Mostert. Norton led the Junior Boks to the 2025 World Championship and the recent U20 Rugby Championship title. Lock depth has been a concern for the Springboks heading into the season, and Norton's performance will be closely watched.
Siya Kolisi captains the side. Faf de Klerk returns to the national setup as reserve scrumhalf after a stint in Japan. Aphelele Fassi and Grant Williams also return from Japan. André Esterhuizen, who used last year's Barbarians fixture to make his first appearance as a loose forward, starts at centre.
The Barbarians are coached by Scott Robertson, the recently sacked All Blacks coach. His squad is built on attacking flair — dry and mild conditions in Gqeberha should suit their expansive style. Their midfield pairing of Munster's Alex Nankivell and Fiji Drua's Virimi Vakatawa gives them genuine physicality and offloading ability. Esterhuizen called them "a powerhouse centre pairing."
"It's a powerhouse centre pairing," Esterhuizen said. "Nankivell is a strong, abrasive runner with good offloading skills. And we have all seen Vakatawa play for France. It's going to be a good battle in the centres."
But the Barbarians' biggest problem is preparation time. Players only assembled at the start of the week, some confirmed after Monday. Building collective patterns against the world's best-organised Test team in under a week is a massive ask.
Erasmus has made it clear the Springboks will treat this as a Test match. Expect set-piece dominance, territorial control, and a focus on tactical kicking and defensive organisation. Last year, the Springboks thumped the Barbarians 54-7 in Cape Town. This year, the experimental lineup might make the score closer, but the intent is the same.
This fixture kicks off a demanding season for the world's number one ranked side. The Nations Championship opener against England follows in two weeks. Erasmus is using this match to test combinations and blood new players before the real business begins.
