Outgoing Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has rolled the dice hard in his farewell squad.

He's snubbed experienced locks Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and Nick Frost, calling up uncapped duo Miles Amatosero and Lachlan Shaw for the July Test series against Ireland, France and Italy.

Schmidt is coaching his last three Tests before handing over to incoming head coach Les Kiss. And just like he did two years ago with his first squad, he's going out swinging.

Salakaia-Loto is one of the most physical forwards in Australian rugby — 123 kilograms, 198 centimetres, 45 Test caps since 2017. But despite playing 11 Tests in 2024, he was controversially left out of the British and Irish Lions series squad. Now he's out again.

Frost has been a regular starter since debuting in 2022, with 38 caps including against the Lions. But a sub-par Super Rugby season with the Brumbies cost him.

With Will Skelton also missing — ruled out for the season with a ruptured Achilles — the Wallabies suddenly have zero experienced locks.

Amatosero, 24, has won his call-up after three seasons with the Waratahs. His season started in controversy after a training ground fight with teammate Angus Scott-Young, earning a two-game suspension during trials.

Shaw, 23, is a 200-centimetre rising star from Brisbane who's become a mainstay of the Brumbies pack.

At flyhalf, Declan Meredith gets his first Wallabies call-up at age 29 — a late bloomer who started the season in outstanding form for the Brumbies. He's in ahead of incumbent Tane Edmed, who started the Wallabies' last Test in France but has been behind Meredith in Canberra this season. Ben Donaldson and Carter Gordon are the other No.10s.

Jock Campbell has been recalled for the first time since 2022, and Charlie Cale is back after featuring in 2024 but missing much of the last two winters through injury.

The squad includes Tom Hooper and Len Ikitau, who are playing in the English Premiership final this Sunday. Assistant coach Laurie Fisher indicated they'll likely be overlooked for the first Test against Ireland due to lack of preparation time.

Taniela Tupou is in a similar boat — he's set to line up for Racing 92 in the Top 14 semi-finals on Sunday. If Paris beat powerhouse Toulouse, they'll progress to the final, and Tupou would be a certain absentee from the first Test.

The full 37-man squad

It's a massive gamble from a coach with nothing to lose. Whether it pays off against Ireland in the first Test at Allianz Stadium remains to be seen.
