The Nigeria Premier Football League title defence for Rangers FC has begun with a stumble. On Sunday, the defending champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Katsina United at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta. Luis Dadong put Katsina United ahead just before halftime, and it took a late equalizer from Chibueze Oputa in stoppage time to rescue a point for the Flying Antelopes.
Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu expressed his dissatisfaction with the team's performance, stating it wasn't what they'd prepared for. "I’m not happy, but a game like this, you’ve got something that you need," Ilechukwu said after the match. He stressed that the team would use the opening fixture as a crucial learning experience as they pivot their focus to the upcoming CAF Champions League.
Rangers FC is currently using the MKO Abiola Sports Arena as their temporary home ground. Their usual stadium in Enugu is undergoing renovation work. This venue will also serve as the base for their CAF Champions League preliminary-round matches. Their first continental opponent will be AS Sobemap from the Benin Republic, making their early familiarity with the Abeokuta pitch potentially advantageous.
Despite the draw, Ilechukwu was quick to praise the reception and support the team received from the fans in Ogun State. "I want to first of all thank the fans, Abeokuta people, for the great support. It’s not easy to come here for a few days and get this kind of massive support," he noted. He added that the team accepts the temporary arrangement and feels well-welcomed, calling the arena their home for now.
Ilechukwu insisted that the team's training sessions have been productive and that the errors committed in the match are within their control. "Everything is in our hands. All the errors and mistakes are from us," he stated, dedicating the late equalizer to the supportive fans. The focus now shifts to addressing the shortcomings exposed against Katsina United.
The coach acknowledged that the second half showed some improvement compared to the first, but admitted that the team missed several scoring opportunities. "We have a lot of chances, but I don’t know," he mused. However, he maintained that there's no cause for alarm, as most of their attacking players were available. The club captain was the only notable exception, having been sidelined due to injury a few days prior.
Rangers FC, who clinched their ninth NPFL title last season, now face the challenge of competing on two fronts. The draw against Katsina United serves as a stark reminder of the work needed to succeed in both the domestic league and the demanding continental competition.
The opening weekend of the 2026/27 NPFL season saw several other matches played. Rivers United started strongly with a 2-0 victory over Plateau United, and Ikorodu City defeated new entrants Ranchers Bees 3-1. Barau FC also secured a convincing 3-1 win against Nasarawa United. Meanwhile, Shooting Stars had already kicked off the season with a 2-1 win against Inter Lagos on Friday. The match between Abia Warriors and Kun Khalifat was temporarily suspended due to heavy rainfall.
