Orlando Pirates' new teenage signing Bohlale Ngwato needs to be hugged and shown love to perform at his best, according to his former coach.
Lehlohonolo Seema, head coach of Siwelele where Ngwato played before his move, told Soccer Laduma that the 19-year-old winger is talented but fragile. "He's one guy that needs to be hugged and shown love and to talk to him. In terms of pressure, I don't know if he would handle it," Seema said.
Ngwato joined the Buccaneers earlier this month as one of four new signings. Pirates are preparing for the CAF Champions League next season and could lose star winger Relebohile Mofokeng in the coming weeks. Ngwato is seen as a replacement.
Seema said the young player has a lot to improve but praised his attitude. "There's a big room for improvement on a lot of aspects. He's willing to learn, he's a good boy. There is no troubles with him. He's a boy that is willing to listen, and that's what is good about him. He's able to listen and take instructions."
The coach added that Ngwato has talent that can take him far if he stays serious. "Look, he's a talented young man and I would have loved to have him [much longer] because there's still a lot that he still needs to learn – to make him stronger. But there's no doubt there's talent there, and he can go as far as he wants if he becomes serious, and he stays on the course."
Pirates' interest in Ngwato comes as Mofokeng's future remains uncertain. The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to Europe after impressing for the club and Bafana Bafana. If he leaves, Ngwato will have big shoes to fill at a club that demands immediate results.
Seema's warning about pressure carries weight. Pirates are one of South Africa's biggest clubs, with passionate fans and high expectations. Young players often struggle to adapt. Ngwato will need time and support to develop, but the club's Champions League ambitions mean they may not have the patience to wait.
The Buccaneers have also signed three other players this window as they strengthen their squad for continental football. The club hasn't confirmed Mofokeng's departure, but reports suggest a deal could be finalised soon.
For now, all eyes are on Ngwato. His former coach believes he has the raw ability. Whether he can handle the heat of Soweto derbies and Champions League nights is another question entirely.
