The much-awaited June 12 Democracy Day celebration is set to kick off in Lagos on Friday, June 10. This year's event is organized by the Movement for Credible Elections (MCE), in conjunction with the June 12 Pro Democracy Movement of Nigeria, with former Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku as the Chairman. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Chief (Mrs) Bisi Abiola, a member of the Abiola family, will be Special Guests of Honour.

The theme for this year's celebration is 'Electoral Acts 2026, INEC, and the Sanctity of the 2027 Elections.' The focus is on the current electoral laws and their impact on the upcoming elections. The event will also touch on poverty, insecurity, and credible elections in Nigeria, with a call to action for stakeholders to launch a nationwide mobilization for credible elections in 2027.

Leading activists, including Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, Dr. Usman Bugaje, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, and Comrade Ayuba Wabba, are expected to pay special tributes at the breakfast session for heroes and heroines of the Nigerian democracy. They will honor those who have contributed significantly to the country's democratic journey.

The celebration will kick off on June 10 with a National Breakfast Tributes Session at MKO Abiola Democracy Centre in Ikeja, Lagos, starting at 9am. This will be followed by a solemn procession to Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, where the annual National Democracy Discourse will take place from 11am under the theme 'Reenacting the Credibility of the June 12 Elections in Nigeria in 2027.'

Top politicians, including former Vice President Mr. Peter Obi, Prince Adewole Adebayo, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Governor Rotimi Ameachi, have been invited to attend the anniversary celebration. The event promises to be a significant gathering of Nigeria's heavyweights, with a focus on the future of democracy in the country.

The MCE, an umbrella coalition of prominent Nigerians, has highlighted issues that will be tackled during the nationwide campaign. These issues include the unpopular electoral act of 2026, constant confusion caused by judicial interference in the electoral process, immoral money politics, the exclusive cost of seeking political office in Nigeria, and INEC interference in the internal affairs of political parties.

Key agendas of the MCE to be tackled by stakeholders during the nationwide campaign include tackling the unpopular electoral act of 2026, reducing constant confusion caused by judicial interference in the electoral process, ending immoral money politics, reducing the exclusive cost of seeking political office in Nigeria, and putting an end to INEC interference in the internal affairs of political parties. They also want to address the growing insecurity in the country that may affect the 2027 elections, among others.

Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Chairman of the LOC, has stated, "The theme of this year's celebration is a call to action for all stakeholders to ensure that the 2027 elections are credible, free, and fair."
