Former Borno Governor Dismisses Obi's Chances
Former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, has declared that the Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has no chance of winning the 2027 presidential election in the North. Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today, Sheriff said Obi will never get the support of Northern voters because of his past actions as governor of Anambra State.
"I am not worried about Peter Obi because I know Northerners will never vote for him," he said. When reminded that Obi won substantial votes in states including Plateau and Nasarawa during the last presidential election, Sheriff maintained that circumstances had since changed.
### Obi's Time as Anambra Governor Sparked Distrust
Sheriff claimed that Obi's time as governor of Anambra State left many Northerners dissatisfied. He alleged that Obi chased Northerners out of Anambra State during his tenure.
### Kwankwaso's Supporters Oppose Obi Partnership
The former Borno governor further claimed that supporters of former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso had voiced opposition to any political partnership between their leader and Obi. "This is what people in Kano are telling Kwankwaso now," he said. "They say they have always supported him and will continue to do so if he contests for president, but they will not support him if he aligns with Peter Obi," he said.
### Sheriff Defends Tinubu's Record
Sheriff also defended President Bola Tinubu's record on security, dismissing Obi's recent criticism of the administration's handling of insecurity.
### The Presidency Should Stay in the South
Sheriff expressed confidence that the APC would remain in power after the next general election. He argued that the presidency should stay in the South until 2031, following the current rotation arrangement.
### Atiku to Wait Until 2031
Sheriff also dismissed the prospects of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is expected to contest the 2027 election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, saying he would have to wait until 2031 for his turn as president.
### APC to Continue Campaigning Vigorously
Sheriff expressed confidence that President Tinubu would secure a second term in 2027 but added that the APC would not take victory for granted and would continue to campaign vigorously ahead of the election.
### Context: APC's Rotation Arrangement
It is worth noting that the APC has traditionally followed a rotation arrangement for the presidency, with power alternating between the North and South. Under this arrangement, the North will hold the presidency until 2031, and the South will hold it for two terms from 2031 to 2039.
