K.K. Fosu Takes On Incumbent Sammy Awuku in Akuapem North MP Race

Ghanaian highlife musician K.K. Fosu is throwing his hat into the ring to contest the Akuapem North parliamentary seat, challenging incumbent MP Sammy Awuku. Fosu is contesting as an independent candidate, claiming he has a good chance of defeating Awuku.

Fosu made the announcement on Asempa Showbiz, where he said he was not intimidated by Awuku's influence or party affiliation. 'If Sammy Awuku likes, he should leave the NPP and come to meet me face-to-face', Fosu said. When the host suggested that Sammy Awuku would have the edge because he represents the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Fosu replied: 'the NPP is even dead. That is what people say'.

Fosu first announced his intention to enter parliamentary politics ahead of the 2024 general election but decided not to file his nomination due to a motor accident. He also disclosed that when he learnt Sammy Awuku would be contesting on the ticket of the NPP, he decided to step aside. Sammy Awuku, a former National Organiser of the NPP, won the party’s parliamentary primary for Akuapem North in January 2024 before going on to win the seat in the December 2024 general election.

The incumbent MP Sammy Awuku is a former National Organiser of the NPP, a position he held for several years. His background in politics, particularly in the NPP, gives him a strong advantage in the constituency.

The Akuapem North constituency has a long history of political engagement, with many notable figures having served as MPs. Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, the previous MP, served the constituency from 2017 to 2024.

Fosu's decision to contest as an independent candidate may not sit well with the NPP, given his earlier claims that the party is 'dead'. However, Fosu is confident that his charisma and name recognition as a musician will give him an edge in the race.

Fosu said that he is 'not afraid of anyone' and will not back down from the challenge. When asked to respond to Awuku's challenge, Fosu said 'KK Fosu, m’aya da. Please get me a campaign track before you pick the nomination forms. Nice weekend bro', a response that shows he is not taking the challenge lightly.
