The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) grilled Nigerian activists Peter Akah and Mama Pee over allegations of naira abuse on Thursday. But in a video posted by Akah shortly after leaving the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, the duo vowed not to be intimidated into silence.
Akah said they were initially invited to the EFCC last Wednesday, but they rescheduled their appointment and honoured it on Thursday instead. They were released around midnight before returning for further questioning. Speaking on the video, flanked by Mama Pee, Akah said, "We are just coming out of the EFCC headquarters here in Abuja. It was an invitation by EFCC. We moved it to yesterday. We came by ourselves by 1:00 pm; we were released by about midnight."
However, when they returned to the EFCC on Thursday, they were informed that the investigation was about naira abuse. They maintained that they did not abuse the naira, but rather used props for entertainment purposes.
The activists also expressed gratitude to Nigerians who expressed concern over their welfare and their lawyers, Inibehe Effiong and Prof. Sam Amadi, for providing legal representation. Akah also thanked some EFCC officials.
The duo stated that the EFCC invitation would not deter them from criticising the government. "We will never be silenced. We will never be intimidated into silence. As long as I have life in me and I have breath in my lungs, as long as God gives me this sharp mouth to talk for a better Nigeria, I will continue to speak up for what I believe is right, is true and is just," Akah said.
Akah also reaffirmed his support for Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election. "And in 2027, I am unapologetically Obedient. My vote, campaign and support are for Mr Peter Gregory Obi, and no amount of harassment will change that," he said.
The EFCC has not issued a public statement on the outcome of the investigation.
Peter Akah is a Nigerian activist known for his outspoken criticism of the government. He is a strong supporter of Peter Obi, who is running for president in the 2027 general election. Mama Pee, whose real name is Precious Oruche, is also a prominent activist who has been involved in several high-profile campaigns against corruption.
The EFCC has been investigating allegations of naira abuse, which involve the misuse of the Nigerian currency. The investigation is ongoing, and it is not clear when it will be completed.
The activists' lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, had previously said the investigation relates to allegations of naira abuse. However, Akah and Mama Pee maintained that they did not abuse the naira, but rather used props for entertainment purposes.
According to Akah, the EFCC investigators told them that they needed clarification on the allegations of naira abuse. The activists provided the clarification, and the investigation is ongoing.
The duo stated that they will continue to speak out against corruption and bad governance, despite the EFCC invitation. They urged the government to focus on addressing insecurity rather than targeting critics.
Mama Pee also urged Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the next general election. "The most important thing you can do for us and this country is to go and get your PVC. Don't just vote wisely, you need to vote Peter Obi," she said.
The activists had earlier honoured the EFCC's invitation on Wednesday and were released after hours of questioning before returning to the commission on Thursday to continue the investigation.
Their lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, had previously said the investigation relates to allegations of naira abuse and that his clients maintained that the money referenced in the allegations consisted of props used for entertainment rather than genuine naira notes.
