A Rare Rescue

A juvenile Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus) was rescued in Banga, South Cotabato, over the weekend. The eaglet was received by personnel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO) in Banga from officials of Barangay San Vicente. The rescue is a crucial step in the conservation of the species.

Maria Elvira Lumayag, OIC regional executive director of DENR-12, confirmed the rescue. Personnel from DENR-CENRO Banga took the eaglet to the Regional Wildlife Rescue Center-Region 12 (RWRC-12) in Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat, for further evaluation and rehabilitation. The RWRC-12 serves as a temporary refuge for rescued, surrendered, and confiscated wildlife species in the region.

The eaglet was found to be in a weak condition and required round-the-clock care. Wildlife specialists at the facility assessed the health and condition of the rescued animal and determined its readiness for release back into the wild. The rehabilitation process aims to contribute to biodiversity conservation and the protection of native wildlife populations.

This rescue is a rare occurrence, as Brahminy Kites are not commonly found in the area. The eaglet's age and condition suggest that it may not have been able to fend for itself. The DENR-CENRO staff's swift action ensured the eaglet received the necessary care in a timely manner.

The Regional Wildlife Rescue Center-Region 12 has a long history of successful wildlife rehabilitation. The center's efforts demonstrate the commitment of the DENR to protecting and conserving the country's unique wildlife.
