Lagos Market Fire Guts 17 Shops in Ikorodu, No Casualties Reported

The single sharpest fact in one or two punchy sentences: A midnight fire outbreak razed 17 containerised lock-up shops at Sabo Market in Ikorodu, Lagos State, in the early hours of Tuesday.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service received a distress call at 12:42 a.m. and immediately deployed firefighters from the Ikorodu and Ijede Fire Stations to the scene. Emergency responders arrived at approximately 12:54 a.m. to find the fire engulfing 17 shops in a row of about 30 containerised lock-up shops.

The affected shops were located on a parcel of land measuring approximately 648 square metres within a larger premises covering about 1,944 square metres.

The combined efforts of firefighters from both stations successfully contained and extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the remaining shops and nearby properties. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were recorded during the incident.

The Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, adding that an investigation has commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the outbreak.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service commended its personnel for their swift response, which helped avert what could have been a much larger disaster.

Margaret Adeseye has been serving as the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service since 2020, leading the agency's efforts to improve fire safety and response in Lagos State. Adeseye has a background in emergency management and has worked in various roles within the Lagos State government, including serving as the Head of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.

The Sabo Market where the fire occurred is a major commercial center in Ikorodu, with hundreds of shops and market stalls operating within the premises. While the fire did not affect any nearby properties, it highlights the need for improved fire safety and emergency preparedness in Lagos State's markets and commercial centers.

The Lagos State government has been working to improve fire safety and emergency response in the state, with initiatives such as the establishment of fire stations in strategic locations and the provision of fire safety training for market operators and other stakeholders.

As the investigation into the fire continues, the Lagos State government is expected to work closely with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to identify any contributing factors and take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
