Nintendo just made every gamer's jaw drop. During its June 10 Nintendo Direct livestream on YouTube, the company announced a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time — arguably the most beloved game of all time — alongside Kingdom Hearts IV and a brand-new Final Fantasy title.
Let's start with the big one: Ocarina of Time Remake. The original 1998 game is widely considered the greatest video game ever made, scoring a perfect 99 on Metacritic. It defined 3D action-adventure with its time-travel story, Z-targeting combat, and Hyrule Field. Now it's getting a full remake for the Switch and Switch 2, though Nintendo hasn't confirmed a release date yet. Filipino fans who grew up renting N64 cartridges in Quiapo or playing on emulators in computer shops are already losing it.
Kingdom Hearts IV also took center stage. The action-RPG series from Square Enix and Disney picks up after Sora's sacrifice at the end of Kingdom Hearts III. The new trailer shows Sora waking up in a modern city called Quadratum, alongside his signature companions Donald and Goofy. The gameplay footage shows a more realistic art style and fast-paced combat. No release date was given, but the announcement alone is huge for the series' massive Filipino fanbase — Kingdom Hearts has always been huge in the Philippines, with fans lining up for midnight releases in SM malls.
Final Fantasy Resonance was another surprise. Square Enix revealed a brand-new mainline entry in the legendary RPG series, though details are scarce. The trailer showed a futuristic setting with a female protagonist wielding a giant sword. No release window yet, but it's coming to both Switch and Switch 2.
The Direct also featured several other announcements. A new Metroid Prime 4 gameplay trailer showed Samus exploring a new alien world with updated graphics. Fire Emblem: Echoes of the Holy War — a remake of the classic SNES game Genealogy of the Holy War — was confirmed for 2027. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition got a release date of March 2026, bringing the Wii U open-world RPG to Switch with all DLC included.
Nintendo also showed off Switch 2 hardware briefly. The new console is backward-compatible with original Switch games, has a larger OLED screen, and supports 4K output when docked. Pre-orders start in September 2026, with a price of ₱24,995 in the Philippines. That's steep for many Filipino gamers, but the library of announced titles might make it worth the savings.
"The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is getting a remake for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2," Nintendo said during the stream. No further details on whether it will use the original's graphics or get a full visual overhaul like the 2011 3DS version.
What does this mean for Filipino gamers? The announcements are huge for the local scene. Ocarina of Time is a cultural touchstone — many Filipino millennials remember playing it on borrowed N64s or via emulation. Kingdom Hearts IV brings back the Disney-Square magic that filled Mega Malls with cosplayers. And Final Fantasy Resonance means another epic RPG to sink hundreds of hours into. The only downside? The Switch 2's ₱25K price tag might force many to save up or wait for a sale.
No specific release dates for most games, but expect more details at future Nintendo Directs. The message is clear: Nintendo is going all out for its next generation.
