Kylian Mbappe is now France's all-time top scorer, and he's coming for the World Cup record too.

The Real Madrid superstar scored twice in France's 3-1 win over Senegal on Tuesday at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The brace took him to 58 goals in 99 appearances for Les Bleus, moving him one ahead of Olivier Giroud.

Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 66th minute, finishing off a superb pass from Michael Olise. Bradley Barcola added France's second, and after Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal, Mbappe smashed in his second in injury time to seal the win.

It was the perfect start to the World Cup for France, the tournament favourites. And it pushed Mbappe further up the all-time World Cup scoring chart.

He now has 14 goals in 15 World Cup appearances. That puts him level with Germany legend Gerd Mueller. Ahead of him are Brazil's Ronaldo (15), and Lionel Messi and Miroslav Klose (16 each). Messi joined Klose at the top later Tuesday with a hat-trick against Algeria.

Mbappe has already surpassed Pele (12 World Cup goals) and French great Just Fontaine (13, all scored in 1958).

"I'm really pleased and very happy to make a little more history for my country," Mbappe said. "It's something I always wanted to do, although we know why we're here, so I think I'll have the time to think about all these things once I stop playing."

He added: "We want to keep writing the biggest page in the history of the French national team. We know the road is very long, but we're ready."

France have reached four of the last seven World Cup finals. They won in 2018, lost the 2022 final to Argentina on penalties — a game where Mbappe scored a hat-trick. Now they're chasing a third title, and it's the last tournament for coach Didier Deschamps, who is stepping down after 14 years.

Deschamps gave Mbappe his international debut as an 18-year-old in 2017. He's watched him become the star of the team, scoring four goals in the 2018 World Cup and eight in 2022 to win the Golden Boot.

Mbappe scored 42 goals in 44 games for Real Madrid this season. His World Cup record is incredible — but his European Championship record is the opposite: just one goal in nine matches, a penalty at Euro 2024.

France's next game is against Iraq in Philadelphia on Monday, then they face Norway in Boston on June 26. Mbappe could break the World Cup record before the group stage ends.

One man making it easier is Michael Olise. The Bayern Munich winger was devastating in his World Cup debut, playing centrally behind Mbappe.

"It's so easy to play with Michael. He always has his head up, and you just need to try to give him the option," Mbappe said. "He always wants to go forward and serve his teammates. I knew he'd find me every time I made a run. It's super cool."

Barcola summed it up: "It's really incredible what he does, in every game and every training session. He never ceases to amaze us."
