Former England captain John Terry believes the Three Lions have a genuine chance to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as they prepare to kick off their campaign against Croatia on Wednesday evening.
Terry, now a SuperSport analyst, says the squad under Thomas Tuchel is one of the strongest in world football. “I’m extremely excited to see England at this World Cup,” he told SuperSport. “We have a really good squad of players and, more importantly, I feel like we have a real chance of going on to win this World Cup.”
England's opening match against Croatia is set for 8 PM on Wednesday, 17 June. A win would give Tuchel's side early momentum in a group they're expected to top.
Terry pointed to captain Harry Kane as the most important piece. “I think Harry Kane is pivotal to that. If we can keep Harry fit, he’s our captain, our goalscorer, and he plays a big role for us both on and off the pitch. So, I’m very positive when it comes to England.”
He also credited Gareth Southgate, the previous manager, for building the foundation. “They can see the transition under Gareth Southgate and the great work he did. I think they’re hopeful that Thomas Tuchel can make the difference as well.”
Terry didn't shy away from naming the biggest threat. “I would see France as the favourites,” he said. “Their attacking options and threat are so vast and so deep. They’ve got so much talent.” He also warned that the weather in North America would favour teams that control possession, like France and Spain.
While Terry is optimistic, he admitted he would've included a few players who missed the cut. “I think Harry Maguire would've been in my squad for sure, and Cole Palmer as well.” Palmer scored for England at the last Euros against Spain. Terry also mentioned Trent Alexander-Arnold, now at Real Madrid, as a useful option for set pieces and late-game situations.
The tournament runs until 19 July, and England will need to navigate a knockout path that could include France, Spain, and others. Terry believes the squad depth gives them an edge. “I think the strength of our squad surpasses that of many other countries, so hopefully that’s going to be a big plus for us.”
“I’ve said this all along. I think the strength of our squad surpasses that of many other countries, so hopefully that’s going to be a big plus for us.”
For Ghanaian fans, England's run is always a talking point. With many Ghanaian players in the Premier League, the Three Lions' fortunes are closely followed in Accra and Kumasi. Terry is convinced this time feels different.
