The shores of Gqeberha became a grim silver carpet last week as thousands of dead sardines and pilchards washed ashore. Residents on Hobie and Pollock beaches watched in dismay as the ocean deposited more and more fish, sparking fears of a deadly virus. Local environmental group Algoa Bay Conservation described the scene as "heartbreaking." This mass stranding follows a similar, disturbing event along South Africa’s Western Cape coast just weeks prior, raising alarms among scientists and environmentalists.
Marine scientists like Professor Nadine Strydom from Nelson Mandela University's zoology department confirmed they received numerous calls about the phenomenon. She explained that what washes onto the beach is likely only a fraction of the total fish lost, with many more potentially lying unseen on the seabed. The scale of this mortality event is still not fully known, but initial observations point to a serious ecological threat.
The primary suspect for these widespread deaths is pilchard herpesvirus, or PHV. This is the same disease that wreaked havoc on sardine populations in Australia and New Zealand back in the 1990s. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) stated that while confirmation is pending, a link between the Gqeberha and Western Cape events is considered probable. PHV is the "leading explanation" for the Western Cape die-off, though other environmental factors are also being investigated.
This isn't the first time PHV has been detected in South African waters. It was first confirmed in July after tests on sardines collected near Saldanha Bay, Cape Canyon, Elands Bay, and Gansbaai came back positive. Genetic sequencing revealed the South African strain shares over 99 percent similarity with the one that caused the Australian outbreak. Professor Strydom noted, "This is the first time it has happened in South African history," highlighting the unprecedented nature of the situation.
While PHV genetic material was found in both dead and apparently healthy sardines off Saldanha Bay, with the highest viral loads in the deceased fish, the DFFE spokesperson Zolile Nqayi cautioned that this doesn't definitively prove causation. Scientists are working to determine if PHV is the direct killer or if it's preying on fish already weakened by environmental stressors. South Africa's sardine stocks are already under pressure from low numbers, oxygen-depleted waters, and harmful algal blooms, all of which can make the fish more susceptible to diseases.
Further complicating matters, sardine strandings have now been reported along Namibia's coastline, suggesting the problem is spreading. While PHV is not known to pose any risk to human health, the outbreak's economic and ecological consequences are already being felt. Near Cape Town, dead sardines clogged the cooling-water intake at the Koeberg nuclear power station, forcing the utility to reduce power output by half at one of its two units.
Conservation groups like WWF South Africa are deeply concerned. Craig Smith, a senior technical specialist at WWF, mentioned they are collaborating with government and industry. "In Australia the virus wiped out 70 percent of the stock," he noted, adding fears that this could be just the first wave, with a potentially more devastating second wave to follow. Sardines are a vital food source for many marine animals, including dolphins, seals, seabirds, and the critically endangered African penguin. Their decline could have significant ripple effects throughout the marine food chain. Professor Strydom elaborated that the implications are "huge" for the environment.
For Algoa Bay, home to a crucial African penguin colony, the loss of sardines could worsen existing food scarcity issues for the birds, which are already struggling due to overfishing. Ronelle Friend, an environmental chemist with Algoa Bay Conservation, stated, "Already because of the uncontrolled fishing, penguins are struggling to get food and now with this virus killing sardines it’s going to be worse." Fishing communities are also on edge. Veteran fisherman Bonny Adams from Durban noted this year's sardine run was already leaner than usual, and now, "with this virus, we don’t know what to expect. We are worried indeed."
An intergovernmental task team is now coordinating efforts for surveillance, testing, and disposal of the dead fish, alongside assessing the overall impact on sardine stocks. The Small Pelagic Scientific Working Group is set to meet this week to discuss potential management actions. A clearer picture of the full scale of the mortality is expected later this year when the DFFE conducts its annual hydroacoustic survey of sardine stocks.
