It’s not every day you see a maritime lawyer, an astrophysicist, and a mining ICT expert teaming up to manage a party. Yet, that's exactly the cocktail of talent the APSU 2002 Year Group has assembled today. They've announced their new leadership for the Steering Committee in charge of hosting the 97th Anniversary of St. Augustine’s College, a milestone event that's been a century in the making.
Mr George Baffour Asare-Afriyie, Esq., and Dr Linus Kweku Labik are taking the wheel as Co-Chairmen. They're joined by Mr Raymond Andoh, who steps in as the Vice Chairman. These appointments take effect right now, as the group pivots from planning to actually getting the work done.
Mr Asare-Afriyie isn't just any lawyer; he's an international maritime expert with a degree from Tulane Law School. He's done time at Harvard Law School and sat on the Legal Committee of the International Maritime Organisation. He's currently the Assistant Secretary of APSU USA, giving him a global perspective to this local school anniversary.
Dr Labik is the man to watch if you want to understand how planets form. As a lecturer in the Department of Physics at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), he spends his days using advanced models to look at dust coagulation. Beyond his academic work, he assists the National Hilal Committee in scientific moon-sighting. He's been keeping the 2002 group together as Convenor since 2019.
Mr Andoh brings a different kind of expertise to the table, having spent 17 years in the mining sector as an ICT engineer. He's a Microsoft Certified Professional who also holds a title as the Abakomahene of the Mampongso Divisional Area in the Western Region. He knows how to handle big projects and local leadership simultaneously.
The Engine Room Behind the Scenes
Supporting these leaders is Mr Bernard Abaka Acheampong, who acts as the Secretary to the Planning Committee. As a veteran within the APSU system, having served as the founding Convener for a full decade, he brings a wealth of experience to the table. His background in conflict resolution and governance will be vital for keeping the planning process smooth.
He has deep roots in the National Executive Council of APSU Worldwide, where he's been a fixture since 2008. Over eighteen years, he's held positions ranging from National Porter to Assistant Secretary. This level of institutional knowledge ensures that the 97th anniversary doesn't just happen, but happens the right way.
St. Augustine's College, affectionately known as AUGUSCO, remains a powerhouse in Ghana's educational landscape. Alumni associations in Ghana are not just about showing up to eat jollof and drink drinks once a year; they function as major development engines for these schools. The 2002 group is leaning into this tradition by pulling from their most experienced professionals to manage the logistics of a nearly century-old institution's birthday.
"The Executive Committee expresses full confidence in the appointees' ability to support the Convenor and work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure a successful and memorable anniversary celebration." It's clear that the 2002 group is putting their best feet forward. With a legal mind to handle the compliance, a scientist to handle the data, and an ICT specialist to manage the technical side, they seem to have covered every angle. If this committee can't pull off a world-class anniversary, then nobody can.
