Fake nurse caught filming newborns in Anambra clinic, rescued from mob

A 37-year-old woman disguised as a nurse was filmed secretly recording newborn babies in a hospital maternity ward in Anambra State. Her capture has sparked an investigation into alleged child trafficking. The woman, Anurika Nweme, was caught on Tuesday by hospital staff at Divine Mercy Hospital in Awada, Obosi, where she claimed to be working as a nurse. But hospital management said she was not a registered employee and was likely using her disguise to gather footage of the babies. Nweme is currently in protective custody and cooperating with police to identify any other individuals suspected of involvement in child trafficking.

The incident comes as part of a broader regional crackdown on the practice. In the past month, law enforcement agencies in several states including Akwa Ibom and Rivers have intercepted buses carrying missing children and arrested suspected traffickers. Akwa Ibom State police command intercepted a bus with three missing children and arrested two suspected child traffickers in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of the state. Rivers State government has shut down five hospitals and a patent medicine store across the state over alleged child trafficking and other offences.

The Rivers State government has arrested seven suspects, including some facility operators in connection with the alleged child trafficking and other offenses. The Anambra State Police Command is also investigating the activities of some suspected child traffickers in Awka South Local Government Area.

The police command said it would also investigate allegations of child trafficking in other parts of the state. The command's spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga said Nweme had been transferred to a safe location for her protection. Ikenga stated that the police command would continue to work to prevent child trafficking and prosecute any offenders.
