It is confirmed. Alexx Ekubo is dead.

The beloved Nollywood actor passed away on Monday May 11, 2026 after a secret battle with cancer. He was 40 years old. He was rushed to a hospital in Lagos on Monday and spent several hours on life support before passing away. Family sources confirmed he had been battling cancer privately while completely away from public life.

Now everything makes sense.

Alexx had been off social media since December 30, 2024. No posts, no stories, no updates. Fans were worried. People were asking questions. His friends came out one by one to reassure everyone that he was fine, that he just needed a break from a toxic media environment, that he would be back stronger than ever.

He was fighting cancer the entire time.

His colleague IK Ogbonna appeared with him at his sister's wedding months ago and told fans he was in perfect health. His friend Stanley Ontop posted publicly that Alexx was doing great and would return to social media soon. Whether they knew the full truth or were respecting his wish for privacy, we may never know. But the reality is that while everyone was speculating about his absence, Alexx was quietly fighting the hardest battle of his life.

And he fought it alone. Away from the cameras, away from the noise, away from the same internet that had been so cruel to him in his final years.

Because it was not just a social media break that brought Alexx to this point. The years leading up to his disappearance were brutal. His engagement to Fancy Acholonu collapsed publicly in 2021. Gay allegations followed. The media toxicity was relentless. Stanley Ontop had even said at the time that depression was real and that the media had been too toxic on him. Alexx stepped away to protect what was left of his peace — and it turns out he was also protecting a secret that was far bigger than any of them let on.

Alexx Ekubo was one of Nollywood's most complete talents. He starred in over 100 films across a career that spanned more than two decades. He was first runner up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest which launched his mainstream career. He won Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Best of Nollywood Awards in 2013. In 2020 the United Nations named him one of the Most Influential People of African Descent under 40 for his contributions to entertainment and humanitarian work across the continent.

He was also the face behind Yemi Alade's iconic Johnny music video — one of the most watched African music videos of all time with over 90 million views on YouTube. An entire generation of Nigerians grew up watching that video. That face. That smile.

He never got married. He never had children. He left quietly, the same way he had been living his final chapter — in private, in pain, and with more dignity than most people could manage.

Tributes are already pouring in from colleagues across the industry. Actor Godwin Nnadiekwe described it as Nollywood losing a rare soul.

Alexx Ekubo was 40 years old. Gone too soon. Nollywood has lost one of its finest and Nigeria has lost one of its most beloved sons.

Rest in peace Alexx Ekubo. 💔
