SASSA Children's Grants in July 2026 will be paid on Thursday, July 9, 2026, after a predictable four-week cycle. The payments come as the department experiences political upheaval following President Ramaphosa's firing of minister Sisisi Tolashe last month and her replacement with interim minister Sindisiwe Lydia Chikunga.

Chikunga's interim position, however, doesn't bode well for meaningful improvement to SASSA Children's Grants in July 2026, as her tenure is uncertain. Other factors impacting South African Social Security Agency grants currently include revisions to income eligibility requirements for the SASSA Child Support grant. Previously, a single caregiver could earn R5 100 per month and still qualify. Now, the limit has increased to R5 800. For married couples looking after a minor, the figure increases from R10 200 to R11 600 per month.

These changes add up to R69 600 annually for a single person and R139 200 annually for a couple. Interestingly, there is no asset portion to the means test, unlike with SASSA Old-Age Grants in July 2026. In some cases, SASSA Child Support Grants have been approved on the same day as applicants submitted their applications. Previously, the waiting period was closer to three months. SASSA Children's Grants, which include SASSA Foster Child, SASSA Care Dependency, and Child Support, are available for new applicants.

SASSA Foster Child is only for court-appointed homes that care for foster children. This grant has increased by R40 from R1 250 to R1 290 this year. Foster parents may only receive one grant per child. SASSA Care Dependency is for mentally and/or physically disabled children under the age of 18, paying the same amount as adult Disability. As such, this grant has also increased by R80 from R2 320 to R2 400 in April 2026.

To qualify for Disability, which can be temporary or permanent, applicants must be deemed so by a state-appointed doctor, officially acknowledged by SASSA. The SASSA Child Support Grant pays R580 per month, up by R20 from R560. Former minister Tolashe has left a department in disarray, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the grants going forward.

If you have a young child who needs financial support and you comply with the above income requirements, here's what you need to apply: a valid identity document (ID) and birth certificate of you, your child, and spouse (if married). You'll also need proof of marital status (marriage, birth, or death certificate of your spouse) and proof of income (you and your spouse). Additionally, you'll require a certified three-month bank statement that's no older than three months, and proof of address (a utility statement with your name on it that's not more than three months old).
