Khayelitsha's Site B Library Reopens After R3.1 Million Renovation
The Khayelitsha's Site B Library has reopened its doors to the public after a R3.1 million renovation project, two years after a devastating fire.
The fire that occurred in February 2024 left the library in a state of disrepair, forcing it to close its doors to the public. However, the City of Cape Town launched a R3.1 million renovation project in October 2025 to restore the library to its former glory.
According to the City of Cape Town, the renovations included the replacement of the roof and ceiling, interior and exterior painting, and wall repairs. New flooring and tiling were also installed, as well as the refurbishment of public toilets and an upgrade to the library's lighting and electrical infrastructure.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, who was present to officially open the library, expressed his hopes for the newly renovated facility: "I hope this library is a blessing to the community for many years to come, and that many children and residents will use it to check out books or as a quiet place to study, listen to music, and just [as] a wonderful community space." He added that the library is a symbol of the standard of care and service that the City of Cape Town wants to provide to its residents.
The reopening of the Khayelitsha's Site B Library comes just a few days after the recently upgraded Langa Library was burgled. Here's hoping that the Site B Library will fare better in the years to come.
### Future of Cape Town's Libraries
Mayor Hill-Lewis also announced that the City plans to invest R227 million in library upgrades, equipment, books, and subscriptions over the next three years. This investment is part of the City's efforts to improve its library services and make them more accessible to the community.
Other major projects under way include the refurbishment of the Brown's Farm library in Philippi, which was damaged in 2023, and the doubling of the size of the Lwandle Library in Lwandile. These projects demonstrate the City's commitment to providing quality library services to its residents.
### New Beginnings
The reopening of the Khayelitsha's Site B Library marks a new beginning for the community. With its upgraded facilities and improved services, the library is poised to become a hub of activity and learning for the community. We wish the library and its users all the best in the years to come.
