Residents in multiple Cape Town suburbs will face water supply disruptions this week due to planned maintenance on the city's water infrastructure. The City of Cape Town announced that several suburbs will lose water between 20 and 26 July as crews install new infrastructure, replace valves, and test for leaks.
The affected areas include Primrose Park, where crews will shut off the water supply along parts of Velocity Road. A test shutdown will take place on Tuesday, 21 July, from 09:00 to 17:00, followed by a main shutdown on Thursday, 23 July, during the same hours. The work will affect Velocity Road, Gani Road, Comity Road, Fielies Way, Silicy Road, and Endeavour Road.
In the Cape Town CBD, Jetty Street will experience a water shutdown on Tuesday, 21 July, from 09:00 to 18:00, while crews install a new connection. The work will also affect Roggebaai Square. Residents and businesses in the area may experience low water pressure or no water.
Bantry Bay will see a fire hydrant replacement, with a test shutdown on Tuesday, 21 July, from 09:00 to 14:00, followed by a main shutdown on Thursday, 23 July, from 10:00 to 18:00. The work will affect Victoria Road, Florida Steps, 75 Victoria Road, and surrounding streets.
In Elsies River, Clarkes Estate and Adriaanse will experience a water shutdown on Thursday, 23 July, from 09:00 to 18:00, while contractors install new water connections in Old Stellenbosch Road for a housing project.
The Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant will shut down for maintenance from 00:01 on Thursday, 23 July, until 23:59 on Friday, 24 July. The shutdown may affect parts of the Drakenstein and Stellenbosch municipalities, as well as private consumers supplied by the Wemmershoek pipeline.
The Voëlvlei pipeline will undergo acoustic leak detection testing between 23 and 24 July. Testing may reduce water pressure or interrupt supply in parts of Hermon, Drakenstein, Klipheuwel, Durbanville, Fisantekraal, and Wellington, as well as properties supplied directly by the Voëlvlei pipeline.
The City has advised residents to store enough water in clean, sealed containers before the planned shutdowns and to expect cloudy or milky water for a short time after supply returns. Some maintenance work may take longer than expected if crews encounter unforeseen challenges.
The City has also announced that teams will survey selected properties before installing smart water meters between 20 and 26 July. The surveys form part of the City's programme to modernise water metering and improve water management across Cape Town.
Residents are encouraged to keep taps closed while the water supply is off and to expect temporary discolouration of the water after supply returns.
