The Cunning Little Vixen hits the Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone from July 21 for a strictly limited season. This enchanting show is designed especially for young theatre-goers, families, and anyone who has never been to an opera before.
The story revolves around a spirited young fox who is determined to live freely in the forest. Along her action-packed journey, she encounters all sorts of hilarious creatures and humans, learning valuable lessons about friendship, courage, love, and the wonders of nature.
The clever new English adaptation by librettist Alan Olejniczak makes the story incredibly easy to follow, while musical director Jan Hugo keeps the beautiful music bouncing along. It also marks the exciting operatic directorial debut of Fiona du Plooy, a brilliant movement expert who knows exactly how to bring a stage to life.
To make the forest feel truly magical, an award-winning creative team has designed stunning masks, brilliant makeup, and imaginative sets that will make you feel as though you have stepped right into a storybook.
The stage will be bursting with talent, led by guest artist Siphamandla Moyake as the cheeky vixen, Sharp Ears, and Nica Reinke as her clever friend, Gold Stripe the fox. They are joined by a fantastic cast of local opera stars, including Thandolwethu Longo as the Wise Owl and Dumisa Masoka as a very funny hen.
Members of the Cape Town Opera Children’s Chorus will be buzzing and hopping around the stage as dragonflies, fox cubs, crickets, hedgehogs, and frogs, adding tons of extra colour and delight to the show.
