Bafana Bafana are back on the biggest stage. Tonight at 21:00 SA time, they take on Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City – the same stadium where the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals were played.
The match revives memories of the 2010 World Cup opener at Soccer City, where Siphiwe Tshabalala's famous goal earned South Africa a 1-1 draw against El Tri. This time, the stakes are different, but the nostalgia is real.
South African fans have plenty of options. The match will be broadcast live on SABC 1, SABC 3, and SABC's digital platforms (website and app). DStv subscribers can catch it on SuperSport channel 202. So no excuses – you can watch from the couch, your phone, or a shebeen with a big screen.
Coach Hugo Broos has been dealt a boost ahead of kick-off. Left wing-back Aubrey Modiba has returned to full training after concerns over his fitness. Modiba's availability is key – he provides attacking width and defensive cover on the left flank.
Broos is expected to field a side that blends experienced internationals with younger talent. The Belgian tactician has overhauled the squad since taking over in 2021, and the team has shown steady improvement. But tonight is the real test.
Mexico are ranked 15th in the world. South Africa sit 60th. And Mexico have the advantage of playing at home in front of 87,000 fans at the Estadio Azteca. That's a hostile environment for any away side, let alone a team ranked 45 places below.
But Bafana have shown they can rise to the occasion. Under Broos, they've beaten Morocco (Africa Cup of Nations champions) and held top African sides. The question is whether that form translates to the World Cup against a CONCACAF powerhouse.
This is Group A. After Mexico, Bafana face Czechia on 18 June in Atlanta (18:00 SA time) and South Korea on 25 June in Monterrey (05:00 SA time). Every point counts. A draw or win against Mexico would be a massive statement and put them in strong position to advance.
For the younger players in the squad, this is a chance to put themselves in the shop window. A good performance on the world stage can change careers.
Tune in at 21:00. Watch on SABC 1, SABC 3, SABC digital, or SuperSport 202. Expect a tough match, but don't write off Bafana. They've been written off before and proved people wrong.
