The single sharpest fact in one or two punchy sentences. Who did what, where, when, and why it matters. Not a summary of everything — the one thing that makes someone stop scrolling. A reader who only reads this paragraph must understand what happened.

Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba, a 44-year-old ANC leader, was tragically killed in a car accident in Newcastle on Saturday morning while jogging. He was struck by a bakkie driven by someone who attempted to avoid him but failed.

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have opened a culpable homicide case for investigation following the road accident. According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the driver of the bakkie, who has not been named, stayed at the scene until family and police arrived.

Mahlaba was a dedicated ANC leader with a remarkable background. He served as an ANC member of the Provincial Task Team (PTT), KZN legislature member, and the chairperson of Committees in the KZN legislature. He also served as Newcastle Local Municipality mayor, Sport, Arts and Culture MEC, and Public Works and Human Settlements MEC.

Mahlaba's younger sister, Nondumiso, said her brother's death shattered the family. 'It was unexpected, but we trust God through the process. Ntuthuko was everything in our home, one of the strongest family members we have at home,' she said.

KZN ANC leadership visited the Mahlaba family to offer condolences following the tragic incident. ANC KZN provincial coordinator Mike Mabuyakhulu revealed the driver of the vehicle that struck Mahlaba did not flee the scene after the accident.

'Mike Mabuyakhulu said it was untrue that the driver fled. What we wish for now is for the police to carry out their investigation to the end,' stated Mabuyakhulu. He noted that Mahlaba was of great help to the community as he assisted with various initiatives.

Mahlaba had a programme where he donated shoes to different students across the province, and he also helped people with disabilities with their wheelchairs, which is something that means a lot to the community. He touched many people in the community they live in. They have lost as the ANC party because he was also helpful in various things,' added Mabuyakhulu.

Mahlaba will be buried at KwaGrace, in Nquthu, where he was born.
