Presidential Backing for Tinubu's Re-election Bid

The single sharpest fact is this: the Nigerian Presidency is backing President Bola Tinubu's bid for re-election in 2027, citing his administration's economic reforms and infrastructure development nationwide.

President Bola Tinubu, a 70-year-old Nigerian politician, has been in office since 2023. He was first elected as the Governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007, serving two terms. Tinubu joined Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party in 2014 and ran for the presidency in 2015 and 2019 but lost both times. He won the APC primary in 2022 and eventually became Nigeria's President in 2023.

Tinubu's administration has focused on economic reforms and infrastructure development. The President's Senior Special Assistant on Media and Special Duties, Tunde Rahman, said at a press conference in Nasarawa State that the administration's reforms have delivered significant results. "We have seen iconic road projects. We have seen interventions in healthcare. We have seen bridges, both by the Federal Government and the state governments," Rahman said.

In Benue State, Tinubu's delegation inspected federal and state infrastructure projects, including the Makurdi-Otukpo-Enugu road corridor. The project is a direct response to the horrific history of fatal crashes along the dualised Abuja-Keffi Road, including a single incident in which 225 lives were lost.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Print Media, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, described the projects inspected in both Benue and Nasarawa as evidence of the Tinubu administration's lasting legacies. "Taken together, what we have seen today actually represents what we've been saying to Nigerians about the revolution that the Tinubu administration has brought," Abdulaziz said.

The removal of fuel subsidy freed up resources which the Federal Government and states are reinvesting into projects with tangible impact, Abdulaziz explained. He cited the Makurdi-Otukpo-Enugu road corridor as a project that has already cut travel time and stimulated new economic activity across three states.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Nasarawa State Urban Development Agency, Wada Mohammed, explained that the Total Roundabout flyover and circular intersection in Keffi was a direct response to the historic fatal crashes along the dualised Abuja-Keffi Road.

The flyover, initially costed at N11.1 billion, had required an upward review after the Federal Ministry of Works directed an increase in bridge headroom to accommodate higher vehicles. With compensation of over N600m already paid to affected property owners and road furnishing estimated at another N1 billion, Mohammed said the project is expected to be completed within its 18-month timeline.

Tinubu's Senior Special Assistant on Media and Special Duties, Tunde Rahman, dismissed the opposition's criticism of the administration's record as denial in the face of evidence. "Forget about the remonstration of the opposition, who continue to claim that Mr President has not done anything, seeing is believing," Rahman said.
