You might have heard of Alex Eala, the youngFilipino tennis star who has been making waves in the international tennis scene. But did you know that she has a trailblazer who helped put the country on the global tennis map?

Cecil Mamiit, a former Davis Cup standout who competed in all four Grand Slam tournaments and reached a career-high ATP ranking of No. 72 during his peak in the late 1990s and 2000s, said Eala’s rise to the world top 30 should inspire a new generation of Filipino players to dream bigger and aim higher.

Mamiit, who first met Eala when she was just 9 years old, believes Eala will be paving the way for more Filipinos in the sport, for women’s tennis, and for women in sports. He said, “Alex will be doing great things. There are still a lot of years ahead of her. She is still learning a lot, and she has been a great ambassador for the Philippines in tennis.”

A decorated international career, winning six gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games and two bronze medals in the Asian Games while representing the Philippines, also under Mamiit's belt, who served as a hitting partner for tennis superstar Maria Sharapova in 2011.

Philippine tennis appears to be entering a new era with the country hosting its first-ever WTA 125 tournament, the Philippine Women’s Open, earlier this year, as a growing crop of young talents has emerged. Eala continues to elevate Philippine tennis on the international stage with her breakthrough campaign at the Berlin Open.

But with great success comes great pressure, and Mamiit emphasized that sustained support will be crucial to Eala’s long-term success. He said, “It’s all about continuation and the support. If she is around, a lot of Filipinos will be behind her. I think the world globally is catching on and I think it’s inspiring nations as well that someone can be that supported.”

Eala is coming off a breakthrough campaign at the Berlin Open, where she stunned world No. 2 Elena Rybakina and world No. 8 Elina Svitolina before falling to Linda Noskova in the semifinals. She then competed in the Bad Homburg Open in Germany, where she teamed up with tennis legend Venus Williams.

Eala’s Statistics and Achievements

• Reached the semifinals at the Berlin Open • Teamed up with tennis legend Venus Williams in the Bad Homburg Open • Set to compete in Wimbledon as a seeded player for the first time in her career • Ranked 30th in the world • Won six gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games and two bronze medals in the Asian Games while representing the Philippines

You might be wondering what this means for the future of Philippine tennis. The country's growing talent pool and Eala's rising star status are a testament to the growing interest and support for the sport. As Mamiit said, “With this enrichment and Alex, it will [come down] to timing. Tennis is timing. So, we’re hoping for the best for everybody.”

And so, as Alex Eala continues to soar to even greater heights, one thing is certain - she will be a shining star in the world of tennis for years to come.
