CEBU CITY, Philippines — If you're working on June 12, your pay should double for the first eight hours.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has reminded private-sector employers to follow holiday pay rules for Independence Day. The guidelines are in Labor Advisory No. 11, Series of 2026, released ahead of the country's 128th Independence Day celebration.
June 12 is a regular holiday, meaning workers who report for duty are entitled to 200% of their daily wage for the first eight hours. This is standard for regular holidays under Philippine labor law.
For those who don't work, the rule is different: they still get 100% of their daily pay, thanks to the "no work, no pay" principle with a holiday pay twist. But that's only if they're on regular status and have reported for work the day before or after the holiday.
The advisory applies to all private employers nationwide. DOLE said non-compliance could lead to complaints and possible sanctions.
Independence Day marks the declaration of Philippine independence from Spanish rule on June 12, 1898. This year's observance falls on a Friday, giving workers a three-day weekend.
The labor advisory spells out the computation: For work done on a regular holiday, the employee gets twice their daily rate. If the holiday falls on a rest day, the rate goes up to 260% of the daily wage. Overtime on a holiday is paid an additional 30% of the hourly rate.
DOLE reminded employers that these rules aren't optional.
Workers who believe they were underpaid can file a complaint at any DOLE regional office. The department urged employees to keep their payslips and time records as evidence.
With June 12 falling on a Friday, many Filipinos will enjoy a three-day break. The holiday also falls within the school year break for most public schools, making it a chance for family trips or rest.
But for those in retail, hospitality, and essential services, work continues. The double pay rule is meant to compensate them for giving up the holiday.
DOLE's advisory covers only private-sector workers. Government employees are covered by separate rules issued by the Civil Service Commission.
The 128th Independence Day celebrations will include the customary flag-raising and wreath-laying at the Luneta Park in Manila, led by the President and other officials.
