Jimmy Alapag, a 5-foot-9 guard and one of the most celebrated figures in Philippine basketball, has left his role as a player development coach for the Sacramento Kings in the NBA to coach his old stomping ground, the NLEX Road Warriors, in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
Leaving his family behind, Alapag made the difficult decision to uproot for the NBA, a chance he couldn't resist despite the prospects of continuing his coaching career in the States. Alapag, born in the United States to Filipino parents, moved to the Philippines in the early 2000s and joined the PBA in 2003 as the 10th overall pick of Talk 'N Text.
In his 12 seasons with Talk 'N Text, Alapag won several titles, including the 2003 All-Filipino Cup, the 2011 league MVP honors, and six championships, two of which saw him named Finals MVP. Alapag also had an illustrious national team stint, leading Gilas Pilipinas on a memorable run that culminated in the Philippines' return to the FIBA World Cup in 2014 after a 36-year absence.
"It just felt like it was the right time. Almost six years in the NBA, I’ve had an opportunity to see a lot, to learn a lot, and I know how much it’s allowed me to grow, not just as a husband and as a father, but also as a coach," said Alapag.
His wife, LJ Moreno, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to return to their homeland, citing the difficulties she faced raising their children while Alapag was away. "It’s a blessing to be able to come back," she said. "Basically during NBA season, it’s like I’m solo parenting."
Before joining the Kings, Alapag was part of the team's Summer League coaching staff and later an assistant coach for the Stockton Kings in the NBA G League. His return to the Philippines, however, is not because of a lack of opportunities in the NBA, but rather a chance to pour his knowledge and experience back into Philippine basketball as a head coach.
