A Cebu hospital is now prescribing Pilates alongside medicine. The Hospital at Maayo (THAM) teamed up with Evolve Movement Studio to launch a Pilates program inside its Physical Wellness and Rehabilitation Unit (PWRU). The partnership was formally inaugurated on May 9, 2026.

This isn't your typical gym membership. The program's designed for patients recovering from injuries, surgeries, or dealing with chronic pain. Pilates focuses on core strength, flexibility, and controlled movement — skills that directly support physical therapy goals.

At the launch event, Ms. Auvrey, a representative from Evolve Movement Studio, said: "This collaboration is very meaningful to us because it brings together two things that we deeply believe in: movement and healthcare."

The ceremony included speeches from leaders of both organisations and a ribbon-cutting to mark the official opening. The program is now available to patients referred by THAM's doctors and therapists.

For Filipinos, this blend of clinical care and fitness feels familiar. The country has a strong culture of "masahe" and hilot — traditional healing through touch and movement. Pilates is a modern, structured version of that same principle: the body heals better when it moves correctly.

Evolve Movement Studio is known in Cebu for its specialised Pilates instruction. The Hospital at Maayo, located in Mandaue City, has positioned itself as a modern healthcare provider that integrates wellness services beyond just treating illness.

Instead of doing boring rehab exercises alone in a room, patients get guided Pilates sessions with trained instructors. The exercises are adapted to each patient's condition — no one's doing advanced moves on day one.

Doctors at THAM can now prescribe Pilates as part of a treatment plan, just like they'd prescribe medication or physical therapy. This could speed up recovery for patients with back pain, joint issues, or post-surgery stiffness.

The partnership also opens the door for group classes once patients are stable enough. That adds a social element — recovering together can be more motivating than going it alone.

For Evolve Movement Studio, this is a chance to show that Pilates isn't just for the young and flexible. It's for anyone who needs to move better, including people who can barely walk after an accident.

The hospital plans to monitor results and may expand the program if it proves effective. No word yet on whether insurance covers the sessions, but given the Philippine healthcare system's gradual shift toward preventive care, it might not be far off.

For now, patients at The Hospital at Maayo have a new option: get stronger from the inside out, one controlled movement at a time.
