Cebu City Turns to PUJ Lay-Bys to Ease
BanTal Traffic
The Cebu City government has announced plans to establish lay-bys, or pocket lanes, along the Banilad-Talamban (BanTal) corridor, one of Metro Cebu's busiest traffic chokepoints.
Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) head Raquel Arce said the city has ruled out road widening along the corridor for now because of the high cost of acquiring private lots. "As far as Banilad to Talamban, wala tay road widening, but nangita og lugar nga feasible for pocket lane [...] Mao ra gyud na mahimo by this time kay [..]..." Arce explained that the city is looking into establishing lay-bys for public utility jeepneys (PUJs) to ease traffic congestion.
The BanTal corridor is a major traffic hotspot, with thousands of vehicles passing through it every day. According to the CCTO, traffic congestion in the area has been worsening due to the increasing number of vehicles and the lack of adequate infrastructure. The city government has been exploring various solutions to ease traffic congestion, including the establishment of lay-bys for PUJs.
### Lay-Bys for PUJs: A Last-Minute Solution
The Cebu City government has decided to establish lay-bys for PUJs along the BanTal corridor as a last-minute solution to ease traffic congestion. The lay-bys will provide a designated area for PUJs to pick up and drop off passengers, reducing congestion on the main road.
The project is expected to cost P10 million, which will be funded by the city government. Arce said that the lay-bys will be constructed in phases, with the first phase set to begin this month. The project is expected to be completed within three months, pending the availability of funds.
### What This Means for Cebu City Residents
The establishment of lay-bys for PUJs along the BanTal corridor is expected to ease traffic congestion and reduce travel time for Cebu City residents. The project is also expected to benefit PUJ operators, who will no longer have to navigate through congested roads to pick up and drop off passengers.
However, critics have raised concerns about the safety and feasibility of the project. Some have questioned whether the lay-bys will be able to accommodate the large number of PUJs that pass through the area every day.
