₱2.6M Smuggled Cigarettes Seized in Vallehermoso, Negros Oriental

Authorities from the Vallehermoso Municipal Police Station confiscated ₱2.6 million worth of smuggled cigarettes early Saturday morning.

According to a report from Cebudailynews, the operation began at around 3 a.m. when the police received a call from the Guihulngan City Police Station requesting the conduct of 'Oplan Tambayayong' in coordination with the Regional Special Operations Group (RSOG).

The two vehicles involved in the operation were identified as a black Toyota Revo and a maroon Toyota Revo, both traveling from Guihulngan City to Vallehermoso.

During the operation, the police conducted a checkpoint in Barangay Poblacion, Vellehermoso, where they received information from a concerned citizen regarding vehicular accidents involving the vehicles.

The black vehicle was involved in an accident in Barangay Puan after its driver lost control and crashed onto the roadside. The impact scattered several cases of the smuggled cigarettes onto the road.

The driver of the black vehicle was trapped inside and was rescued by the police. He was brought to the Vallehermoso Rural Health Unit for medical treatment, while his passenger was detained by the police.

The maroon vehicle crashed into the railings by the road, injuring its driver and passenger. They were also brought to the Vallehermoso Rural Health Unit and placed under hospital arrest.

The police operation is a significant blow to cigarette smugglers who have been using various tactics to evade detection.

It is worth noting that cigarette smuggling is a major concern in the Philippines, with the government losing millions of pesos in revenue each year.

In 2020, the government reported a loss of ₱30.4 billion in cigarette tax revenue due to smuggling.

The incident in Vallehermoso is a reminder of the ongoing struggle to combat cigarette smuggling in the country.

### Authorities on High Alert for Cigarette Smugglers

The Philippine government has been cracking down on cigarette smugglers in recent years, with the Bureau of Customs implementing various measures to prevent smuggling.

In 2020, the Bureau of Customs reported a 25% decrease in cigarette smuggling, with the agency seizing over ₱1 billion worth of smuggled cigarettes.

However, the problem persists, with cigarette smugglers using various tactics to evade detection.

The incident in Vallehermoso highlights the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and citizens to combat cigarette smuggling.
