Three security operatives are dead after gunmen attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, in the early hours of Monday.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the casualties on Tuesday. In a statement signed by the command's Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, the police said security has been reinforced around the facility since the attack.
NIPSS is Nigeria's top policy think-tank, where senior government officials and military officers train on national strategy. The institute is located in Kuru, about 20 kilometres from Jos, the state capital.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The police didn't disclose the identities of the slain operatives or say whether they were police, military, or other security personnel.
In a separate development, Dangote Petroleum Refinery has cut the gantry price of petrol by N75 per litre. In a circular to fuel marketers on Monday, the refinery said the reduction followed the de-escalation of tension in the Middle East, which had pushed up energy prices over the past three months.
The refinery, located in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, began producing petrol in September 2024 and has been adjusting prices in response to global crude oil movements. The latest cut brings the ex-depot price down from previous levels, though the company didn't state the new figure.
In Edo State, the government demolished a building in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area, linked to cultism and ritual activities. Another property was sealed off as part of a crackdown under "Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists."
Governor Monday Okpebholo's media aide, Patrick Ebojele, said in a statement Tuesday that the operation involved the Edo State Security Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies, supervised by senior security officials attached to the governor.
Meanwhile, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has vowed to rescue abducted schoolchildren and teachers in the state. Speaking to social media influencer VeryDarkMan and other protesters at the Government House in Ibadan, Makinde said he was personally distressed by the abduction. He noted that the victims — including nursery and primary school pupils — had been in captivity for over a month.
The governor didn't provide a timeline for the rescue but said the government was doing everything possible to secure their release.
