Ten die, six injured in fatal Ogun road crash
And you could not help but feel sad when you heard the news of a fatal road crash that occurred on the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway on Sunday night. According to reports, a white Sinotruk truck and a white Toyota Hiace bus were involved in the crash. The accident happened at about 8:05 pm at Saapade Bridge.
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, confirmed the incident in a statement. A total of 18 persons were involved in the crash, comprising 15 adult males, 2 adult females, and 1 male child. Sadly, 10 persons lost their lives, comprising 9 adult males and 1 male child, while 6 persons (4 adult males and 2 adult females) sustained varying degrees of injuries. Two adult males escaped unhurt.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash was caused by speed violation, wrongful overtaking, and dangerous driving.
Afolabi Odunsi, the spokesperson for the Ogun FRSC Sector Command, explained that the truck driver reversed on the highway after missing his direction. The approaching bus, traveling at high speed, attempted to navigate through the limited space available and rammed into the truck. The rescue operatives of the FRSC promptly arrived at the scene and evacuated the injured victims to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical treatment. The deceased were deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara.
The FRSC attributed the crash to a combination of speeding, wrongful overtaking, and dangerous driving. Odunsi also said that the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Ishara Division, have taken custody of the crashed vehicles while arrangements have been made for their evacuation. The crash has been cleared, and traffic is flowing freely.
The sector commander, in his condolence message, warned motorists against reversing on highways, excessive speeding, and other traffic violations that endanger lives. He stressed that obeying traffic rules, maintaining safe speeds, and using designated turning points could prevent such incidents.
The tragedy follows a similar incident in May where a dispatch rider lost his life in a collision with a containerised articulated truck along the Ilupeju Bypass area of Lagos State. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority attributed the incident to a struggle for right of way between the rider and a commercial minibus.
