The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has dropped a weather outlook for the week, and it’s not exactly sunshine and rainbows. From Monday, September 22nd to Wednesday, September 24th, expect thunderstorms and rain to sweep across various parts of Nigeria.
It all kicks off on Monday morning with thunderstorms and light rain predicted for parts of Taraba and Kebbi. Later in the day, these scattered thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected to spread over the North-East, Kaduna, Taraba, and Kebbi. If you're in the North-Central region, Niger State might see some light rain with thunderstorms in the morning. By the afternoon or evening, most of the area can expect moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms. Down South, Monday morning looks cloudy, with chances of isolated thunderstorms and light rain in Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River.

Tuesday doesn't offer much respite. The North will see patches of cloud in the morning, with Taraba bracing for thunderstorms and light rain. By afternoon, most of the northern region should brace for moderate rain and thunderstorms. The North-Central zone will experience partly cloudy skies in the morning. By the day's end, expect thunderstorms with moderate rain over parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Nasarawa, and Plateau States.
In the South, Tuesday morning is mostly cloudy, with thunderstorms and light rain expected in parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, and the South-South region.
Wednesday is set to continue the trend. The North will see partly cloudy skies, but thunderstorms and moderate rain are forecast for Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba in the morning. By the afternoon, most of the northern region can expect thunderstorms with moderate rain. The North-Central region will have partly cloudy mornings with isolated thunderstorms and light rain in parts of the FCT, Plateau, Niger, and Nasarawa. Later in the day, the entire region gets hit with moderate rain and thunderstorms.
Across the southern region, Wednesday morning will be cloudy, with most areas expecting thunderstorms and moderate rain later on.
NiMet isn't just telling us to expect the rain; they're warning us about the strong winds that could come with it. So, if you have any loose objects lying around outside, you might want to tie them down to avoid any collisions. Motorists are being advised to steer clear of driving during heavy downpours. And for those at home, it’s probably a good idea to disconnect your electrical appliances from the sockets when the thunderstorms roll in. Staying safe also means keeping a distance from tall trees, as falling branches are a real risk.
