Lagos State Captures 6.4 Million Residents in Digital Identity Drive

The Lagos State Government has announced that it's captured 6,465,667 residents under the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency database. The Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Tobosun Alake, made this disclosure during the ongoing annual ministerial press briefing marking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's seventh year in office. Alake provided a breakdown of the figures, stating that 4,058,333 adults and 2,407,224 children have so far been registered under the exercise. He didn't disclose the exact timeline for completing the registration process, but he noted that it's ongoing.

The Lagos Identity Card Project (LAG ID) is a critical component of the state government's drive to enhance governance efficiency and public service delivery in line with the THEMES agenda of the Sanwo-Olu administration. On digital enforcement and safety initiatives, Alake said there's been an increase in digital traffic enforcement, leading to the tracking of about 86,000 cases in months and 737,000 till date. He also highlighted the "Art and Technology Lagos" initiative as an annual platform aimed at convening stakeholders in the tech ecosystem to support a smarter city agenda. Lagos State currently has 109 data protection officers to ensure compliance and safeguard residents' information. The state records about 250,000 monthly online visits across government platforms. Backend analytics help to monitor user engagement and service delivery. The state has deployed about 3,000 kilometres of fibre duct infrastructure across areas including Alimosho, Ikorodu, and Ibeju-Lekki, with plans to extend this to 5,000 kilometres through private sector participation.
