A 300-level Biochemistry student at the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), Zaharadeen Nuhu, is dead after suspected thieves attacked him with machetes at his off-campus hostel in Kalgo Local Government Area.
Nuhu, who hailed from Niger State, was rushed to a hospital after the attack but died from his injuries early Thursday morning, June 11, 2026.
The university's Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Ibrahim Magawata, announced the death in a circular on Thursday. He said the attack happened at a private hostel in Kalgo where Nuhu lived.
“It's with a heavy heart and total submission to the will of Allah that the university management announces the death of our dear student, Zaharadeen Nuhu, a 300-level student of the Department of Biochemistry,” Magawata stated.
“He was attacked in one of the private hostels in Kalgo by a group of thieves and sustained severe machete injuries. He was taken to hospital but sadly passed away early this morning,” he added.
The university has contacted the Nigeria Police Force, Kalgo Division, and investigations have begun. Security patrols in Kalgo and other off-campus areas where students live have been stepped up.
Magawata also disclosed that the university has scheduled a meeting with owners of private hostels in Kalgo to enforce stricter security measures. These include improved lighting and the engagement of night guards.

He urged students to remain calm and vigilant, avoid late-night movements, move in groups where necessary, and report suspicious persons or activities to security agencies. He also warned against spreading unverified information that could cause panic.
Nuhu was buried on Thursday after a Janazah prayer at the mosque of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi. The university management commiserated with his family, friends, coursemates, and the entire student community.
Some students who spoke to Channels Television on condition of anonymity expressed concern about security in off-campus hostels. They alleged that students have faced various security threats, including attacks, phone snatching, and sexual harassment. They called for stronger security measures in areas where students live.
