Helen Prest has broken her silence after a Lagos State High Court ruled that Adenike Ajayi, not she, is the sole lawful widow of the late Tosin Ajayi, founder of First Foundation Hospital. In a video posted on her Instagram page, Prest said she will continue to defend her late husband's legacy.
Prest's video comes after Justice Oluwayoyin Odusanya of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on 17 June dismissed her claim that she was married to the late physician under Kalabari customary law. The court granted all the reliefs sought by Adenike Ajayi and her children.
Adenike Ajayi and her children have been involved in a prolonged legal battle with Prest over who was the lawful wife of the late Tosin Ajayi. The dispute began after his death on 26 April 2020. The late doctor's death sparked a prolonged legal battle, with Prest claiming they were married under Kalabari customary law.
"If you were in the position that I'm in, you would find strength because the situation demands strength. What's the alternative? To leave your husband's legacy to be trashed? To leave your children's name? To leave the life that we lived together to be just undefended and trashed?"
Prest, who described her late husband as a great man, father, friend, and respected doctor, said she could not keep quiet and allow his legacy to be ridiculed. She vowed to continue speaking about his impact, even if others who benefited from his generosity chose to remain silent.
