‘There is nothing better than living peacefully with one another. Unless we learn to coexist in peace, development cannot take place,’ Deputy Governor Kaletapwa Farauta said.
Umaru Fintiri, the Governor of Adamawa State, has presented financial assistance to the families and dependants of victims who lost their lives during the Lamurde communal conflict in Lamurde Local Government Area of the state.
The presentation was done in Lamurde on Monday and was represented by Deputy Governor Kaletapwa Farauta. Each family received ₦5 million from the Adamawa State Government. Farauta recalled that Governor Fintiri had visited the affected communities shortly after the crisis and promised financial support to the victims' families.
“At the time we lost our people, the governor visited the area and made a promise to support the families of the victims. Today, we are fulfilling that promise by presenting cheques to each next of kin,” Farauta said.
She added that food and non-food items were also distributed to provide relief to the affected families. The deputy governor appealed to residents of Lamurde Local Government Area to embrace peace, stressing that sustainable development can only thrive in a peaceful environment.
“There is nothing better than living peacefully with one another. Unless we learn to coexist in peace, development cannot take place,” she said.
She lamented that many residents displaced by the crisis were still taking refuge in schools, describing the situation as unfortunate.
Mr. Safety Moses, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed appreciation to the state government for the support. He said it would go a long way in restoring hope and improving the livelihoods of families affected by the loss of their loved ones.
In addition to the financial assistance, the government distributed food and non-food items, including maize, rice, wrappers, children’s clothing, mats, and mattresses to the bereaved families.
The Adamawa State Government's move is a welcome development amidst the communal conflict in the state. It is a clear demonstration of the government's commitment to supporting the victims and their families. However, the move may not be enough to address the underlying issues leading to the conflict.
The conflict has left a trail of destruction and has forced many residents to flee their homes in search of safety. The government's financial assistance and distribution of food items will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of the affected families.
But the government needs to do more to address the root cause of the conflict. The conflict has exposed the deep-seated issues in the community, including land disputes and ethnic tensions. The government needs to take steps to resolve these issues and prevent future conflicts.
The situation in Lamurde LGA is a stark reminder of the need for peace and development in the region. The government's move is a step in the right direction, but it is just the beginning.
